IRAN RINVIA ESECUZIONE GIOVANE OMICIDA A 17 ANNI

IRAN: RINVIATA ESECUZIONE CAPITALE DOPO PROTESTA UE

Teheran, 7 mag.
sangue".

Iran delays young man's execution after EU appeal

TEHRAN, May 6  - Iran's judiciary has ordered a onth's postponement of the execution of a young man sentenced to death for murder, a news agency said on Tuesday, two days after the European Union urged Tehran to spare his life.
Amnesty International had said the execution of Behnoud Shojai, who the rights group said was 17 at the time of the crime three years ago, was planned for Wednesday.
The presidency of the 27-nation EU on Sunday urged the Islamic Republic "to immediately halt the execution (of Shojai) and of all other juvenile offenders on death row."
Iran's Fars News Agency did not mention the EU statement in its report, quoting a deputy public prosecutor in Tehran as saying the execution had been postponed with the agreement of the victim's family.
Under Iran's Islamic law, sharia, the family of the victim can agree to pardon the murderer in exchange for "blood money", or financial compensation, but it was not clear whether this may happen in this case.
Amnesty says Shojai intervened to stop a fight between a friend and another boy, and stabbed the other boy once with a shard of glass after being threatened with a knife.
Amnesty International says that Iran has executed at least 28 child offenders since 1990 and that at least 86 child offenders are now on death row in the country.
All 27 EU states have abolished the death penalty and press for an international moratorium.
Iran rejects accusations it is violating human rights and accuses Western powers of double standards and hypocrisy.
