Comunità di Sant’Egidio
President A. Toumani Tourè met a delegation of the Sant'Egidio Community and confirmed he wants to abolish the death penalty. Sant'Egidio requested to help to convince public opinion.
Last April 28th a delegation of the Community of Sant’Egidio met President of Mali, Amadou Toumani Touré, within the International Campaign to abolish the death penalty worldwide, promoted by Sant’ Egidio.
President Tourè confirmed that soon a bill to abolish the death penalty will be presented at the National Assembly and asked Sant’ Egidio to facilitate this process, by means of helping the public opinion to accept the new legislation.
In the next months several meetings and conferences will be held, just to favorish a real participation of social and religious leaders in the debate on this issue.
Mali is abolitionist in practice (last execution in 1980 and last death sentences in 2002).
On the occasion of the last General Assembly on Dec. 18th 2007, Mali voted in favour of the resolution for a moratorium of the executions.
