Vietnam conmuta penas muerte a dos australianos condenados por narcotráfico

Hanoi, 13 oct - El primer ministro de Vietnam, Nguyen Tan Dung, concedió hoy la clemencia a dos australianos de origen vietnamita condenados a muerte por tráfico de drogas, cuyas penas serán conmutadas por cadena perpetua. Dung hizo el anuncio con motivo de la visita de su homólogo

australiano, Kevin Rudd.

Se beneficiarán de la medida Jasmine Luong, de 34 años y hallada culpable de haber intentado sacar del país 1,4 kilos de heroína; y Tony Manh, de 40 años, detenido en similares circunstancias en posesión de casi dos kilos del narcótico.

En los últimos años, cuatro australianos de origen vietnamita han visto conmutadas sus sentencias a la pena capital en Vietnam, que jamás a ejecutado a ningún australiano.

Australia abolió la pena de muerte en 1973 y suele pedir clemencia para sus nacionales sentenciados en el extranjero, siempre que no sea por delitos de terrorismo.

Vietnam aplica normalmente la pena capital en casos de posesión, producción o contrabando de más de 600 gramos de heroína, o 2.500 gramos de drogas sintéticas, aunque la legislación contempla también fusilar a quien trafique con más de cien gramos.

Al menos 118 personas fueron sentenciados a muerte en 2007, 85 de ellas por narcotráfico, según datos oficiales.
