World Coalition Against the Death Penalty Press Release

"Surviving Death Row: A Personal Story"

The World Coalition Against the Death Penalty is pleased to announce the holding of its annual General Assembly meeting in Rome (Italy) on 13 June 2009.

From 4pm, the meeting will be opened to the public to hear Jose Martinez. Mr Martinez was sentenced to death in Florida after a botched trial and exonerated three years later when scientific evidence finally proved him innocent. He has spoken out for abolition ever since.

Organized at the invitation of the Community of Sant’Egidio, one of the founding members of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, the General Assembly will be an opportunity for WCADP members to gather, share experience about the current situation of the capital punishment and establish new strategies for its universal abolition.

The World Coalition, seven years after its creation, will hold its first annual general meeting as an independent organization in the Italian capital, where it was founded informally in 2002.

The number of NGOs, trade unions, local authorities and bar associations involved has increased eight-fold between the two Rome meetings. The World Coalition hopes to reach 100 members covering 40 countries in 2009.

The World Coalition Against the Death Penalty

Created in Rome in 2002, the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty brings together 88 bar associations, trade unions, local governments and non-governmental organizations. It aims at strengthening the international dimension of the fight against the death penalty and at contributing to put an end to death sentences and executions. Its main activities are the World Day against the Death Penalty, which will focus on teaching abolition in 2009, a ratification campaign for the United Nations Protocol to Abolish the Death Penalty and a campaign for a universal moratorium on executions.
