The Pope asks to meet a converted Indian murderer

A man, jailed for the murder of a Catholic nun in northern India, has been invited to the Vatican to meet with Pope Francis.

Aleteia - Eighteen years after he stabbed and killed a Catholic nun in northern India, Samunder Singh, already been in prison for this crime, has been invited to the Vatican to meet with Pope Francis. Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, has invited Singh after the Pope has expressed the desire to meet him. A Catholic priest and a nun, the victim’s younger sister, Rani Maria, will accompany him. "I am thrilled to have received this news" said the forty year old Singh to ucanews.com. Singh, who became Christian, under the Catholic priest’s guidance, while serving a 12 year prison sentence, is now busy preparing his travel documents.

The priest, popularly known as Swami Sadanand, was decisive in helping Singh after the murder. The Mary Immaculate Carmelite met him regularly in prison. The invitation to the Vatican is in order to attend a special screening of a documentary on the murder, entitled The Heart of a Murderer, by Catherine McGilvray, the Italo-Australian multi-prize winner director.

The documentary enacts the murder, the Singh’s conversion and his acceptance by the family of the murdered nun. McGilvray, in an interview, said that when she became aware of the story, she was moved seeing the pictures of the "mother kissing her daughter’s murderer and of the killer who became like a brother for the victim's sister".

Pope Francis, it is said, was moved to the vision of the film. The family of the murdered nun had publicly forgiven the murderer and accepted him as a member of the family. Each year, during the Hindu Brothers Day, Rani Maria’s sister ties a Rakhi, a ceremonial wire, to Singh. The ritual is a common practice among brothers.

The murdered nun was declared  Servant of God, the first important step towards beatification, in 2007.
