Motion tabled by the official opposition and adopted unanimously by City Council on August 18th

Whereas it was a Montrealer, Mr. Warren Allmand, who as solicitor general in 1976 submitted and helped pass a law abolishing the death penalty in Canada;

Whereas in 2013, 1,682 cities in 89 countries around the world participated in the International “Cities for Life” Day against the death penalty, including Rome, Brussels, Berlin, Mexico City, Vienna, Paris, Stockholm and Bogota;

Whereas many cities in Canada and Quebec already participate, most notably Ottawa, Toronto, Saint-Jérôme, Boucherville, and Saint-Lambert;

Whereas many executions continue to take place every year in numerous countries and public education on this topic remains essential;

It is proposed by Émilie Thuillier, councillor for Ahuntsic, and seconded by Richard Bergeron, councillor for Saint-Jacques:

That the City of Montreal join the global movement “Cities for Life” against the death penalty in order to add its voice to the huge coalition demanding an end to capital punishment around the world;

That in consequence, November 20th be proclaimed the “Cities for Life” Day against the death penalty;

That, to underline its importance, the City of Montreal proceeds with the illumination of a monument this November 20th, 2014.
