Statement by the International Commission against the Death Penalty on the execution of a juvenile offender Hashem Hamidi in Iran
The International Commission against the Death Penalty (ICDP) has received information about the execution of the juvenile offender Hashem Hamidi which was carried out in the town of Ahvaz in the south of Iran on 5 May 2011. ICDP recalls that the execution of juvenile offenders is clearly prohibited by international human rights law set out in several international instruments, particularly Article 6(5) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and Article 37 (a) of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). As a State Party, Iran is bound to comply with the obligations of these international conventions. ICDP regrets and strongly condemns the execution of Hashem Hamidi and urges the Iranian authorities to stop the use of the death penalty against juvenile offenders under any circumstance.
