Uzbekistan: Death Penalty Abolished by New Constitution

A decision that completes Tamara Chikunova’s life’s work.

The new Constitution of Uzbekistan, approved by a referendum on April 30th, also includes the abolition of the death penalty. This historic turning point brings to mind the relentless battle against capital punishment by Tamara Chikunova, who passed away two years ago.

Following the execution of her son Dmitrij on July 10th, 2000, for a crime he did not commit, Tamara Chikunova worked tirelessly for the moratorium and abolition of the death penalty in Uzbekistan. She dreamed of the complete eradication of this extremely unjust punishment worldwide. In a time marked by too much war and violence, the abolition of the death penalty in Uzbekistan is good news.
